"Just who are
The Ragged Edge?"
The core of The Ragged Edge have been playing together for the last 12 years and are a group of musicians who love to play good music. Individually they have many influences and these have blended together to create a bright, tight and thoroughly entertaining band. We play our own songs and new arrangements of classic numbers. While we are soul based, we can't resist mixing in a little of anything that fits, be it contemporary dance tracks, rock, country, folk, jazz and even a hint of classical. The music is wide and varied and always guaranteed to please.
Mike (lead guitar and backing vocals) is a founder member of The Ragged Edge and has played and worked with so many greats it becomes embarrassing to put them all on here - but one or two just demonstrate why it's good to have him in the band: Pete Watts (Mott the Hoople), Richie Haywood (Little Feat), Rust, Sugarfed, Rescue Express,Tall Stories, The Satellites, Red River Blues, Judy Speedway, Hex Fremlin, Garrison Damn. ("That's quite enough!!" - Ed)
In 2001 Alex (lead vocals and guitar) gave up his “proper job” to become a full time musician and since then has earned his income through playing and singing. This has lead to a varied and exciting career playing in Italy, Germany and now firmly rooted back in the UK. His huge knowledge of songs and his ability to draw in a crowd and transform them into an appreciative audience makes him the perfect front man for the band.
Oogoo (keyboard and backing vocals) has just finished a tour with Blancmange and is completing a PhD. in Music to become Dr. Music. So if you're having trouble with your maracas you know who to go to!
Joseph (saxophones) grew up in Stroud and at the age of 19 went to the Dartington International summer school to study jazz with Keith Tippet and Paul Dunmall. As an actor musician, playing the saxophone has been an integral part of his life for the last twenty years and he has played the saxophone in nearly every single theatre production. Highlights include performing with Trestle at The National, Off The Wall for The David Glass Ensemble, Victor Frankenstein on a European & Asian tour with TNT and the lead role in The Gentle Giant for the Royal Opera House. As a musician, he has recently appeared in Stickman in Leicester Square, in Swamp Juice at the Edinburgh fringe and as a soloist on Sadie Jemmett’s album The Blacksmith’s Girl.
"You lot get better every time I see you."
(Crown and Sceptre, Stroud)
"We thought you and your gang were outstanding—the outstanding performance of the evening, without doubt, confident, sassy, fun, talented; and we will ask you back, for this and other events, if you are keen, willing and able, and not outrageously expensive! HB and I might have a large private party here next year, and you’ll be top of the list for performing." TF - Pigstock Festival.
Chris (bass) is a founder member of The Ragged Edge. Originally conceived as a house band for Ragged Moon Studios the band has quickly burst those chains and is now charting its own course. Chris played most recently with Red River Blues and has also worked as a session musician for various studios locally before starting Ragged Moon Studios.
Brought up in South London Paul (drums) played in various RnB and jazz outfits in the 80s and 90s in London and then Liverpool where he got the opportunity to play in swing bands (which he loved) and to work on pleasure boats on the Mersey playing Beatles covers to revellers (which he loved less). He continued to play in bands until the mid-90s when he gave it all up for family and career. In 2013 after a chance meeting with bass player Chris, Paul joined The Ragged Edge. He loves being behind the kit again and says he’s having a ball. Paul plays vintage Ludwig drums made in the same year he was born.
